Vegan Greek Gyro

I have to admit that I have never had a "real" Greek gyro so I can't officially attest to the fact that this will taste exactly like a real gyro. What I can tell you is that you will love it either way!  Thanks to Jessica Taft of Taft Foodmasters, now us vegans can enjoy the gyro too! I recently met Jessica at a food trade show. She told me that she has been wholesaling her Seitan Gyro for a while and was just getting into the retail business so I tried her gyro and loved it!

The Seitan Gyro is seasoned in such a way that it is bursting with flavor. They say they are the only company to offer a Kosher vegan "lamb shawarma" seasoning. With spices like cumin seeds, coriander seeds, ginger, salt, clove, nutmeg, turmeric, parsley, chili, fenugreek, cinnamon, and black pepper, you can see that it has a lot of spice.  Of course, a gyro wouldn't be a gyro without tzatziki sauce so I made my own - vegan style.

I put it all together and when I took a bite, it was so good, I knew I was going to want a second one within minutes and I did. It is the kind of sandwich that has you "mmmming" as soon as you take a bite.

Vegan Gyro
Serves 4

Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients
  • 8-ounce vegan soy yogurt
  • 1/2 cup vegan sour cream (Tofutti works well)
  • 1 Tbsp chopped dill
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1/2 hothouse cucumber, grated and squeezed dry with paper towels
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Gyro Ingredients
  • 1 package Taft Foodmasters Vegetarian Seitan Gyro
  • Green leaf lettuce
  • Tomato slices, halved
  • White onion, sliced
Instructions
First, make the tzatziki sauce by combining all ingredients in a small bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stir well. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least 3 hours.

Heat a grill pan on the stove on medium heat. Grill a pita or Mediterranean flatbread for a couple minutes on both sides, until warm and grill marks form. Meanwhile, heat a small skillet with a little bit of cooking spray and heat 2-3 slices of seitan gyro meat. Brown for one minute on each side.

To assemble, layer 2-3 slices of seitan gyro meat with lettuce, tomato slices, onions, and top with tzatziki sauce. Roll and serve immediately.

Taft Foodmasters Seitan Gyro is Kosher, Vegan, and non-GMO. You can find it at Pangea.

  1. Angela, that Gyro looks really, really good. I've seen Taft's Seitan Gyro at my local Health Nuts and you've inspired me to make some this weekend.

The last time I ate a gyro, I was 8 or 9-years-old and I just finished seeing KISS perform at Madison Square Garden. A great memory but now it's time to make some new, healthy ones.

    Thanks!
