Nature's Table, Orlando

As I was on my way home from a skydiving event in Florida, I had few hours to kill in the Orlando airport. After walking around for a while, I found Nature's Table. I think it was the word "nature" that drew me to it as I was expecting to see healthy food.

There were a variety of salads, but as it was late in the day, it all looked a little old and sad--like it made you wonder how long all of it had been sitting out. But, I was hungry and I needed something hearty. I asked if the Chili-cado protein bowl was vegan and they assured me it was.

Then, they informed me they were out of chili, which was the heart of the meal. They said they could give me black beans instead. Fine. It ended up being a pretty boring bowl of brown rice, black beans, corn, spinach, and quinoa and no flavor. I doused it with some cheap hot sauce they had and ate it. It felt like five pounds of food!

After I looked into it, I found that Nature's Table has been in business since 1977 and there are now more than 75 franchises across the U.S.

Based on this experience, I don't know if I'd ever go back. I have to assume the chili was tastier than the bowl I got, so maybe it is worth a try.

Vino Volo, Salt Lake City

I spend much of my life in airports--it's true. And when I can't find a lounge, I go straight to Vino Volo for their awesome wine pairings. On this particular day though, it was early in the morning at Salt Lake City airport and I was looking for breakfast. I laughed when I saw some people drinking beer at Vino Volo--I mean it's happy hour somewhere, right?

But, I also noticed people eating breakfast so I asked for a menu. I was so delighted to see an item called "Vegan Breakfast," which was scrambled tofu with tomatoes and avocados served with an English muffin.

I wasn't really in the mood for that though so I asked if the Hummus Wrap was vegan. After a lot of back and forth, I was assured it was. I ordered it to go so I could eat it on the plane. It was rather uninspiring to look at, but it was a good hummus wrap. Made with mixed greens, tomato, kalamata olives, and hummus, I enjoyed it. But, for $10, I guess I thought it would be fancier looking. That's airport prices for you.

The manager was telling me about how this location was different because it was owned by a brewery and had a more extensive food menu. Good to know! Check it out when you are in SLC!

Flying Business First Class with United - Vegan

As you all know, I recently took a trip to Italy and Switzerland. I chose to fly on United because it used to be my favorite airline. I also decided to fly business first class for the first time in seven years because a girl has to treat herself sometimes.  Here's my story complete with info on vegan food in United Business First.

I bought my ticket to Zurich, Switzerland two months early and immediately called to ensure I'd have a vegan meal. With United, you can enter a vegan preference in your profile, but "vegan" is not a meal selection when booking a flight. There is vegetarian and vegetarian non-dairy. What does that mean? It sounded to me like it might contain eggs so I called. And I called and I called. Why did I call so much? Because I'm not that trusting when it comes to these things. Every time I was assured that "vegetarian non-dairy" was vegan. Okay, fine. I believed it after the third call.

Fast forward to the day of travel and, of course, my flight gets delayed, then canceled. I was supposed to fly out of DCA (Reagan National) to Newark and eventually to Zurich (ZRH). Instead, I got in a cab and caught a flight out of Dulles (IAD) direct to Zurich (ZRH). This last minute change assured that my bags would not be with me.  But, even worse was that I probably no longer had a vegan meal. So, as soon as I arrived at the gate, I sought help at the counter at which time they said my vegan meal was on board. I knew that was too good to be true because I quickly found out it wasn't. I was instructed to see the Purser, or the head flight attendant, who told me I needed to have ordered that meal 48 hours ahead of time. As I explained to him that I made a last minute flight change, he didn't seem to care, but still immediately went to search for a solution. He said he was able to locate an Indian meal for me and I said that would be great.

The meal started with warm nuts and wine. Yum.

Then, they served my Indian meal, which was tasty, but definitely lacked the presentation of the first class meals. It looked like a coach meal that they plated, but whatever, I can't be picky due to the flight change.

For dessert, while everyone else had hot fudge sundaes, I had grapes. Sigh.

On the way home, similar drama. This time, they offered me a direct flight even though I was scheduled for a connection, but, in the end, I couldn't change my flight because they refused to move my special meal from one plane to another, so I got stuck on the connecting flight itinerary.  This time I was served several courses. It started with a salad, quinoa, and fruit.

Then, roasted veggies and rice with a tangy red sauce.

Then, later, a veggie sandwich with vegan margarine and more fruit.

So, I got vegan food, but it was not nearly as gourmet or extravagant as the meals around me. I felt satisfied, but slighted at having paid the same as everyone else, but not having the same standard of meal. If they serve hot chocolate sundaes, couldn't they have a pint of almond milk ice cream for me too?

So, the lesson learned is that they can do vegan, but don't expect fresh, gourmet meals with several choices like those around you. You'll get to eat, but you'll get less than everyone else. Luckily, all wine is free in first class, so drink up!! And the dessert wine is divine! Just a little advice for United -- it would be nice for you to offer a fresh vegan meal as well as all customers in a similar cabin who paid similar amounts should be treated the same regardless of dietary preferences.

Real Food Daily, LAX #2

I was flying out of LAX early on a Monday morning when I found Real Food Daily in the terminal! How awesome is this?! Real Food Daily is a vegan restaurant with three locations around the Los Angeles area. But, I guess now this is the fourth. Founded on the principles of serving high-quality, organic, plant-based foods, this restaurant is known for its delicious and healthful cuisine.

So, I couldn't help but check out their menu in the airport. It's pretty simple. They serve a burrito, platter, and sandwich for breakfast and soups, sandwiches, wraps, and burgers for lunch. Luckily, the line was short and soon I realized why. Holy moly -- they are expensive!

I chose the RFD Burrito for $16.50! I kept it and brought it onto the plane and dug in around lunchtime. This whole wheat tortilla was filled with scrambled tofu, roasted potatoes, black beans, peppers, and cashew cheese. It was supposed to come with guacamole and pico de gallo. I only got the pico de gallo. The grilled burrito was filling and satisfying, but definitely not as good as a burrito costing $16.50 should be. And the fact that they forgot my guac made me grumpy.

I'd say it wasn't worth the money, but, quite frankly, I'd buy it again because it is fresh, organic, vegan food in the airport and there sure ain't a lot of competition in that market. And their drink selection is pretty good.

Ben's Chili Bowl, DC

Since 1958, Ben's Chili Bowl has been a downtown DC favorite, but mostly because it is a landmark in DC. Having been visited by celebrities such as Bill Cosby and most recently even our President, Barack Obama, it is well known throughout the city. Recently, they opened a location prior to security in the Reagan National Airport in DC so I thought I'd check it out.

The decor is reminiscent of the 50's with old diner-style tables and chairs. The bright yellow floor brings warmth and brightness to an otherwise clean diner atmosphere.

The menu is quite simple -- you can have veggie chili in a small or large bowl, chili on a salad, or chili in a rice bowl. Alternatively, you could choose a vegan Boca burger though I'm not sure if the bun is vegan. There is also a veggie hotdog, but it is not vegan.

So I went with a simple order of veggie chili topped with fresh onions and tomatoes. Ben's veggie chili is their original recipe made with texturized vegetable protein, kidney beans, tomatoes, green peppers and onions. It really isn't that great -- it's just an old-school chili made the way they used to make veggie chili back in the day. It was a fine meal -- nothing special, but a hearty meal in the airport. I ended up dousing it in hot sauce as it is a bit too mild for me.

Chris also ordered the fries, which he seemed to like.

One thing that bothered me was their use of styrofoam, which is very uncommon in the DC-area and very unenvironmentally friendly. I hope they reconsider the materials they serve their food in and choose more environmentally friendly options in the near future.

All in all though, I'm happy to just have another option in DCA and I'd definitely eat here again. Please welcome Ben's to DCA!

Chicago O'Hare Airport Vegan Options

As you may have noticed, I travel a lot and I thought it might be helpful to start sharing my favorite places to eat in each airport. I've decided to start by profiling Chicago O'Hare, the second busiest airport in the U.S.

I've walked through this airport enough times to know where I want to eat. My first stop is usually Nuts On Clark where I can get some of the best roasted salted cashews in America. See my full review here.

My next stop is CIBO Express located in Terminal 2. This convenience store offers the most options for vegans of anywhere else in this airport.

They have an entire wall of freshly packaged nuts, trail mixes, and dried fruits.

They also have a nice selection of fresh fruits.

But, best of all, they offer vegan entrees, sandwiches, and salads made by Soul Gourmet. On this visit, they had a tofu wrap and a vegan Jerusalem steak. I chose the Vegan Jerusalem Steak along with a Vegan Super Green Salad.  The Jerusalem steak sandwich was made with peppered seitan, green bell peppers, and onions. It was delicious.

The super green salad was made with kale, parsley, red pepper, garlic, and onions. I tried to eat a little bit, then put it away, but it was so good that I had devoured the whole thing within the hour.

CIBO also offers the Ritter Sport marizpan chocolates and Vosges' delicious vegan chocolates. As a side note, Vosges also has a store in one of the terminals that has many more options.

There really is no better place to eat in O'Hare than CIBO Express. But, if you happen to know of other options, please let me know!
