Busboys & Poets, DC #3

Busboys & Poets is my go-to cafe when I'm seeking a nice, casual environment with good food at reasonable prices. I just know to go early so I don't have to wait long for a table.  Zach and I were seeking a quick dinner on a weeknight so we met there around 7 p.m. Luckily, we were seated immediately.

I started with my usual pomegranate lemonade, which is always a solid choice. As always, the place was bumpin'. There was a private party in the back room and the cafe was pretty full with its usual internet cafe patrons on their computers while drinking coffee.

Zach and I started with the new Egyptian Foole Dip. We really wanted our usual quesadillas because they are always delicious, but we thought it would be nice to try something new for a change. And, we are glad we did. Made with fava beans and served with fresh, diced tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos, this dip was really good. And the pita bread that came with it was warm and fresh. This is a great addition to their already solid lineup of vegan choices.

For my entree, I tried the new Orzo Pasta. I loved that it came loaded with fresh, sauteed veggies like diced sweet potato, asparagus, shallots, shiitake mushrooms, red peppers, and kale. It is tossed in a tomato olive oil sauce and because of that, it is extremely oily. I really liked this dish, but they could go a lot lighter on the olive oil.

Zach had his favorite tempeh sandwich, which was particularly good this evening.

The bill was only about $35, which is a steal seeing that the portions are plentiful and the food is great. As soon as they come out with new vegan options, I'll be back with a new report.

  1. I just had the foole dip this week. It was so good I had another.

  2. Sweet! I could just have that dip as my meal!
